Countdown is underway to start of Superyacht Cup Palma 2022

Countdown is underway to start of Superyacht Cup Palma 2022

The countdown has begun to the start of Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 with the four-day Mallorcan festival of sail all set to get underway in less than a month on June 29.

Europe’s longest-running superyacht regatta will lead-off with two races for the awe-inspiring J-Class on the opening day, with Topaz, Ranger and Velsheda – along with the recently entered Svea – providing a magnificent spectacle of timeless racing out on the Bay of Palma.

The whole Superyacht Cup Palma fleet then joins the party for three days of top-flight racing, with the entry list reflecting the dynamic range of superyachts including luxury ocean cruisers, modern classics and high-performance carbon flyers.

An impressive new addition to the list is the 24m Wally yacht Rose (ex-Tango). The Farr design may be the smallest entry in the 2022 fleet, but none of her competitors will be underestimating her potential when racing begins.

“The new owners of Rose are keen to build on her racing pedigree,” said her skipper Ben Potter. “We have a 2022 calendar with emphasis on the biggest and best regattas, and Superyacht Cup Palma will undoubtedly provide one of the highlights of the season. We are all really looking forward to it.”

As ever shoreside events will play a key role in the SYC experience which, for the second year in succession, will be centred on the world-famous Real Club Náutico de Palma. The RCNP will again also provide SYC’s professional race management, a role the renowned club has had since 2011.

“The excitement is growing and the Superyacht Cup Palma team are flat-out making the final preparations for what we believe will be a memorable regatta,” said Event Director Kate Branagh.

From 24th March to 1st April the bay of Palma host the 48th edition of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR, one of the most important Olympic Classes regatta in the world. Around a 800 sailors from 45 nations will meet in Mallorca to start the Olympic path towards Tokyo 2020, in one of the most international sports event and with a higher participation in Spain. “We are delighted to welcome Rose to the Superyacht Cup family, adding further spice to an already competitive fleet, and we are also looking forward to greeting our recently announced Official Timepiece, Jaquet Droz.

“Combined with the return of our long-standing Preferred Hotel Partner St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, part of Marriott International, all the valued components that make Superyacht Cup Palma such a special event are in place.”

One of the highlights of SYC, the glittering Owners’ Summer Barbecue, will be hosted at Mallorca’s best address, the five-star St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort.

Alongside Jaquet Droz and St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, other SYC partners and friends include Destination Partner New Zealand, Silver Partners Astilleros de Mallorca, Evolution Sails, Gottifredi Maffioli, North Sails, Southern Spars, Pantaenius, RSB Rigging, Marinepool, Vitters Shipyard, and Baltic Yachts, DYT Superyacht Transport and Hoek Design.

Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 will get formally underway with superyacht registration at the Real Club Náutico de Palma on Wednesday 29 June, followed by the captain’s briefing in RCNP’s Sala Magna and the Welcome Cocktail presented by New Zealand and DYT Yacht Transport on the RCNP terrace.

“We are delighted to be restoring our long and valued partnership with Superyacht Cup Palma,” said Candice D’Cruz, Vice President, Luxury Brands, Marriott International, Europe, Middle East & Africa. “And we are looking forward to bringing the St. Regis’s timeless legacy, cherished traditions, and bespoke service to one of the finest events in Mallorca.”

Mallorca’s best address, the St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort, will again host the glittering Owners’ Dinner on its recently redesigned and restyled premises, long regarded as the centrepiece of Superyacht Cup Palma, itself the highlight of the Mediterranean superyacht racing season.

Meanwhile, with memories of winter fading thoughts are turning to the enticing summer encounter, with new entries joining the growing fleet for the superyacht celebration in Mallorca’s magnificent capital from June 29 to July 2.

As ever, the fleet will be a blend of regular participants and first timers attracted by Superyacht Cup Palmaa’s well-deserved reputation for excitement and entertainment both on and off the water.

Most recent entries include: the high-performance 32m Farr designed Kiboko Tres, whose owner will be familiar with SYC having raced Kiboko Dos in 2015 and 2016, the 27m David Pedrick designed modern classic Savannah, the 46m performance cruiser Ganesha, last seen in 2011 and 2021 respectively, and the elegant 40m ketch Huckleberry, which was awarded the inaugural North Sails Boat of the Day award at her last SYC appearance in 2019.

“We are looking forward to the opportunity to go one better than last year, when we came second in Class B behind the overall Cup winner Ravenger,” said captain of Ganesha, Alex Pamment. “Superyacht Cup Palma is always a great event and Ganesha has been a regular presence over the years, so we can’t wait for the end of June to come around.”

With the new arrivals SYC organisers are confident of seeing at least a 12-15 strong fleet, including of course the trio of previously confirmed J-Class entries Topaz, Ranger and Velsheda who will be racing on their own dedicated course and with an extra day of racing on Wednesday 29 June.

And as in previous recent events the SYC offers owners, captains, and crews of modern high-performance superyachts the option of competing in a Performance Class, with a separate mass racing start and bespoke racecourse, taking advantage of the outstanding race management expertise provided by SYC’s long-term partner the Real Club Náutico de Palma. The iconic club is also acting as the event venue for a second year.

The Performance Class is one of a trio of options alongside the long-standing Superyacht Class and the non-spinnaker Corinthian Class. Introduced in 2017, it allows SYC to offer something for everyone.

“There is a great energy emerging around this year’s event, and optimism” said SYC Event Director Kate Branagh. “The level of interest has been inspiring, new entries are coming in on a regular basis, and we are very excited to be able to welcome back and showcase the delights of our Preferred Hotel Partner, the St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, part of Marriott International.

“Mallorca is readying itself for the highlight of the Mediterranean superyachting season, and the boost in profile for our sport in Spain following the wonderful news that Barcelona is to host the America’s Cup in 2024 is absolutely great. The event is always a major draw for the world’s superyacht community!”

Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 will open with superyacht registration and the captain’s briefing and Welcome Cocktail presented by Destination New Zealand and DYT Yacht Transport on Wednesday 29 June, followed by three days of racing concluding on Saturday 2 July.

J Class choose the Superyacht Cup Palma as new date announced for 2022

J Class choose the Superyacht Cup Palma as new date announced for 2022

Superyacht Cup Palma is delighted to announce that the J Class will be joining the fun at Europe’s longest running superyacht regatta in 2022.

The J Class Association and owners unanimously chose the high-profile Mallorcan festival of sail as one of three events planned for their racing season next year, and a trio of the magnificent vessels – Topaz, Ranger and 2018 SYC champion Velsheda – are already confirmed entries.

To accommodate the J Class, and after consultation with SYC’s race management partner the Real Club Náutico de Palma and a number of superyachts who had expressed an early interest in attending, the 2022 regatta will now be run from June 29 to July 2, a small move of a week from the earlier June 22-25 dates.

“It is very exciting to host the J Class again in Palma where they will no doubt provide an incredible spectacle of highly competitive fleet racing,” said SYC Event Director Kate Branagh.

“We carried out an extensive consultation with superyachts that had expressed an early interest in entering, along with the RCNP and the J Class, and the move of a week to June 29 – July 2 proved the best option for our participants and partners, and provided the added bonus of avoiding a clash with other Grand Prix events.”

The J Class has a long association with Superyacht Cup Palma, and most of the existing fleet have graced the Bay of Palma regatta, several on numerous occasions, with the venerable Velsheda showing her superyacht rivals a clean pair of heels to top the overall table in 2018.

J Class Secretary Louise Morton said: “Superyacht Cup Palma has built its reputation on having a unique atmosphere, close racing, excellent conditions and great event organisation from the teams at SYC and RCNP, so the decision to include it in the 2022 season was an easy one – the owners were unanimous in choosing it.”

It is also set to be a popular decision with the captains and crews, not least Velsheda. “We have raced at the Superyacht Cup many times and it is a firm favourite,” said her captain Barney Henshaw-Depledge.

“Palma has so much to offer in terms of services for yachts, good restaurants and hotels and easy logistics for a large crew. We expect flat water and with excellent sea breeze conditions in the summer we are really looking forward to the event, and of course hoping for well contested racing to obtain a good result!”

Superyacht Cup Palma will now open with superyacht registration and the captain’s briefing on Wednesday 29 June 2022, followed by three days of racing concluding on Saturday 2 July.
