ROYAL COLLECTION TRUST – Japan: Courts and Culture – The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace

Japan: Courts and Culture: The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace

This exhibition explores British royal encounters with Japan over a period of 350 years.

From samurai armour sent to James I in 1613, to a Coronation gift for HM The Queen in 1953, Japanese treasures have reached the British Court through trade, travel and treaties.

Each object on display reflects materials and techniques particular to Japan. Uniquely, many were commissioned or presented by the Japanese Imperial Family. Together, they reveal the ceremonial, diplomatic and artistic exchange linking the two courts of East and West.

… an exquisite, intricate, truly diverting parade of treasures ★★★★

THE TELEGRAPH

The Royal Collection holds some of the most significant examples of Japanese art and design in the western world. For the first time, highlights from this outstanding collection are brought together to tell the story of 300 years of diplomatic, artistic and cultural exchange between the British and Japanese royal and imperial families. The exhibition includes rare pieces of porcelain and lacquer, samurai armour, embroidered screens and diplomatic gifts from the reigns of James I to Her Majesty The Queen. Together, they offer a unique insight into the worlds of ritual, honour and artistry linking the courts and cultures of Britain and Japan.

Description

This splendid and understated armour was sent to James I of England by Tokugawa Hidetada, third son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who ruled as the second shōgun of the Tokugawa dynasty from 1605 to 1623. Some sources have suggested that the armour may once have been owned by Takeda Katsuyori (1546 – 82), a daimyō who had fought, and lost, against Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle of Tenmokuzan in 1582.

The armour is of the body-wrapped (dōmaru) type, which hinges around the body and fastens on the right. The ‘pumpkin-shaped’ helmet (akodanari kabuto) is signed by Iwai Yozaemon, one of the main armourers to the ruling Tokugawa family. Armours by Iwai Yozaemon in other European royal collections indicate that this was a popular diplomatic gift from the Tokugawa family, easily available from a regular and reliable source.

The helmet has a very wide, almost flat neck guard (shikoro), small turn-backs (fukikaeshi) and visor (mabizashi) decorated in gold lacquer with stylised clouds. The akodanari helmet has prominent vertical rivet lines and is lacquered black. A raised area at the back of the helmet bowl may have been designed to accommodate the chonmage, the samurai hairstyle which consisted of a shaved pate with the hair oiled and tied at the back of the head in a queue. This distinctive form of helmet was extremely popular during the Muromachi period (1392–1573) and the traditional style would have appealed to the Tokugawa family who were conservative in their tastes. The face-mask (sōmen) has a fearsome appearance, although the whiskers have possibly been trimmed over the years.

Much of the armour is laced in red and blue silk in a chequerboard pattern. The lamellae (kozane) are individual pieces of iron lacquered and laced together – a technique known as hon-kozane (‘true’ kozane), which creates a more flexible armour.

Continuing the conservative style, the shoulder guards (sode) are very large for an armour of this period. The solid iron upper areas of the cuirass (dō) are decorated with gold lacquer dragons whose red lacquer tongues chase stylised clouds, possibly symbolising the Buddhist pearl of enlightenment, on a black lacquer ground. The rims (fukurin) and other metal fittings are of engraved and pierced shakudō and gilt-copper alloy. Interestingly, the small fittings to secure the cuirass have a discreet motif of a paulownia (kiri) leaf, an imperial symbol later adopted by the Tokugawa family. The sleeves (kote) are decorated in a similar fashion and have fine, though faded, silk with auspicious motifs and areas of iron mail. The greaves (suneate) are decorated with further stylised clouds in gold lacquer on black.

Provenance

Sent to James I by Shōgun Tokugawa Hidetada, 1613

This is one of the ‘two varnished armours’ given to Captain John Saris of the East India Company at Edo on 19 September 1613. Saris returned to Plymouth with the gifts in September 1614, but no account of their delivery to James I survives. The pair were almost certainly the first Japanese armours to arrive in Britain. By the mid-seventeenth century, they appear to have been separated, for only one was recorded at the Tower of London in 1660. The present armour was stored in a lacquer box in the Armoury at St James’s Palace, where it was inventoried in 1649–51 by the Commonwealth government for the posthumous sale of Charles I’s possessions. At that time, it was described as an ‘Indian Armor’ and purchased by Major Bas on 23 October 1651 for £10.

Following the Interregnum, the armour was returned to the Royal Collection, but confusion about both pieces’ provenance abounded. The armour at the Tower was for example described in 1662 as a present to Charles II ‘from the Emperor Mougul’, in India. As late as 1916, the present armour was confused with another in the Royal Armouries which had in fact been given to Philip II of Spain in 1585. At that time, it was in reality mounted on the wall of the Grand Vestibule at Windsor Castle, with other Japanese items from the Royal Collection.

Italian artist fabio viale tattoos classical marble sculptures

Reinterpreting classic sculptures has become a very fun activity during the pandemic; artist Fabio Viale did the same by printing another narrative on the works, which feature tattoos worn by the Russian and Japanese mafias.

Italian sculptor fabio viale uses a refined, cultured, eccentric, and extraordinarily contemporary approach to historic sculpture-making, which he interprets in a very personal language. provocative when necessary, his work expresses the poetics of displacement and often intends to create a fracture.

the main feature of his tattooed marble sculptures is that they are not colored on the surface — not painted over — but that the ink infiltrates the marble in a very similar manner as tattoos penetrate human skin.

fabio viale : the images that come to us from the past do not belong to simple sculptures: they are icons, they are symbols, which have been able to resist in time. I don’t think it’s a matter of aesthetics or content, but rather of survival during the historical periods. I’ve always been attracted to mysteries, such as the mona lisa (leonardo) or the pietà (michelangelo), and their study has led me, during their reproduction, to understand the artist’s personality more analytically which these works generated.

about fabio viale

the italian artist fabio viale is undeniably an excellent marble sculptor.

born in cuneo in 1975, he hooked his life to marble at the age of 16, when he attended art school (the academy of fine arts in turin) and discoverd his passion for the material. he spent summers close to craftsmen to learn the secrets of the trade.

in adolescence he quickly gained fame in the craft sector and among some antique dealers. initially he produced architectural design components and statues for the monumental cemetery of milan, before starting an independent career as contemporary sculptor. the first few years fabio viale worked alone, now with some collaborators (mainly for the roughing phase).

his works arrived from italy to new york and russia. in 2013 he made his debut at sperone westwater in NY. a year later he won the cairo prize, the most important recognition for contemporary art in italy for having created the first fully functioning and floating marble boat. in 2015 he began a collaboration with the poggiali gallery in florence, which in 2016 led to an exhibition, for the first time in history, of two sculptures of contemporary art in one of the most famous churches in the world: the basilica of san lorenzo in florence.

TRAVEL: This year’s Art is now presented at the ICEHOTEL – Welcome to the cold

Enter a frozen jungle of Monstera plants, sleep soundly and safely with a giant mountain gorilla by your side or dive into the land of dreams within a cloud. These are some of the creations that await the guests of this winter at ICEHOTEL.

The complete ICEHOTEL was inaugurated on December 15 on the river bank in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. With a total of 35 exclusive designer and luxury suites, ice bar, ice ceremony room and ice gallery, guests are welcome to experience an unforgettable night on ice and snow.

We created version 28 of ICEHOTEL this year and I think we have managed to refine Torne River better than ever. The art is exceptional, with great variation, and we expect to receive guests from all over the world, says Arne Bergh, creative director of ICEHOTEL.

36 artists from 17 different countries have created 15 totally unique art suites, a magnificent main hall and a special ice ceremony hall. Everything, including the work of art, can only be experienced at ICEHOTEL during the winter in Jukkasjärvi. When the winter season ends, everything melts and returns to the Torne River as part of a perfect cycle. The permanent part of ICEHOTEL will remain, with ICEBAR BY ICEHOTEL and 20 ice and snow suites; three of which are completely new art suites.

Artists from all corners of the world

Among the seasonal suites, guests can descend into an underground mine with elements of crystalline ice, created by the British brothers Hugh and Howard Miller. The daughter of gardener and jewelry designer Nina Kauppi, raised in a greenhouse, along with her partner Johan Kauppi created a formidable jungle of monstera plants. And Alem Teklu from Ethiopia, together with Anne Karin Krogevoll from Norway, made a suite inspired by the boat trip by the Mediterranean sea, with the name of “Daily Travelers” .suites.

Accompanying, the new suites of the whole year are the luxury suite “34 meters” where the artists Dave Ruane and Luca Roncoroni have sculpted a labyrinth of an ice wall of 34 meters. The labyrinth leads to the heart of the suite, the bed. Lena Kriström and Nina Hedman have in the luxury suite “The invisible invincible” created a group of women marching, 2.5 meters high, invincible and everything but invisible. And the German artist Franziska Agrawal has created the artistic suite “Danger: Thin Ice” (Danger: Thin Ice) in which the guests enter a bridge and cross the ice to get to the bed.

How ICEHOTEL was created

Mongolia, Ecuador, Argentina, the United States, England, Ethiopia and Sweden are some of the countries represented at this year’s art symposium in Jukkasjärvi. Some of the artists have visited ICEHOTEL before, while others have never seen or experienced snow. What they all have in common is that they have been selected by the ICEHOTEL jury and have been invited to participate in the creation of this year. As a helping hand, the artists have had the artistic support of ICEHOTEL and the lighting team at their side, sharing their knowledge and experience on the creation of ice and snow. Work with ICEHOTEL # 28 began in March of last year, when thousands of huge blocks of ice were harvested on the Torne River. The natural ice of the Torne River has been transformed into art at this year’s ICEHOTEL. Art that is as powerful as the nature that surrounds everything

News of this season

In addition to a night between the art of ice and snow, ICEHOTEL visitors can try activities such as an excursion to the Northern Lights by snowmobile, a half-day tour with dog sledding, ice sculptures, arctic yoga, Jukkasjärvi Sauna Ritual and wild dinner. There is also an opportunity to enjoy the award-winning food at the ICEHOTEL restaurant and the Old Homestead in Jukkasjärvi.

New this year

Chef’s table at The Veranda, ICEHOTEL restaurant. The chef awarded the Michelin guide, Alexander Meier, presents a twelve-course menu that focuses on local products with an unforgettable “twist”. Fir sprouts, blueberry and sea buckthorn are some of the flavors found on the menu. Give the ICEHOTEL experience an icy icing on the cake with a bouquet of ice on the table or an ice message delivered to the hotel room. Ice Ceremony Hall. Love blooms at ICEHOTEL and the new thing this year is that the old ice church becomes an ice ceremony room for weddings, engagements, vows or events. ICEHOTEL # 28 can be experienced between December 15, 2017 and April 15, 2018. After that, the permanent part of the hotel offers ice and snow experiences throughout the year, thanks to solar energy.
